Quality

A practical default for email and forms.

How to compress a PDF

  1. Choose a PDF

Drop a file onto the panel or choose one. PDFs up to 25 MB and 100 pages are accepted, and the file stays on your device.

  2. Pick a quality

Compact gives the lowest file size, High keeps the most picture detail. Balanced works for most email and form uploads.

  3. Compress

Embedded pictures are re-encoded as smaller JPEGs. Text stays as text. If the result would not be smaller, you get the original back.

  4. Download

Save the compressed PDF with the same name plus '-compressed'. The size change is shown before you download.

Features

  • Real compression, not a resample

Embedded images are decoded and re-encoded as JPEGs at your chosen quality. Text, fonts, and vector graphics pass through untouched.

  • Nothing leaves your device

The PDF is loaded, compressed, and saved inside this tab. A strict content security policy blocks outbound requests.

  • Metadata stripped

Title, author, keywords, and other document metadata are cleared on output — useful when the original has names you don't want to share.

  • Honest about results

If re-encoding the pictures would not make the file smaller, you get the original back with a note saying so — never a bloated fake compression.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF for free without uploading it?

Use this tool. Choose a PDF, pick a quality preset, and click Compress. The PDF is processed entirely in your browser, so there is no upload, no sign-up, and no file size limit beyond what your device can handle.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on the pictures inside. Scanned documents and photo-heavy PDFs often shrink by 50–80%. Text-only or already-optimized PDFs may not shrink at all, and you will get the original back with a note saying so.

Does compression affect text quality?

No. Text, fonts, and vector graphics are passed through untouched. Only embedded bitmap images (photos, scans) are re-encoded as JPEGs at the quality you pick.

What is the maximum PDF size?

25 MB per file and 100 pages. Files up to about 10 MB and 50 pages are the comfortable target; larger files work but may be slower depending on your device.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is loaded into memory in your browser tab, compressed there, and saved from there. The site's content security policy blocks outbound requests as a guarantee.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

No. Password-protected PDFs are refused with a clear message. Remove the password in your PDF reader first, then compress the unlocked copy here.
